They say that the best way to test a marriage is to build IKEA furniture together. Those people have clearly never tried to reverse a 30-foot RV into a narrow campsite while a crowd of seasoned campers watches with judgmental folded arms.
1. The “Marriage Saver” (Otherwise Known as a Spotter)
In the RV world, your spouse is your “spotter.” In reality, they are a person standing in your blind spot shouting “You’re good!” exactly three seconds before you hear a crunching sound. Pro tip: Invest in walkie-talkies so you can argue in high-definition audio instead of screaming across a campground.
2. The “Stinky Slinky” Dance
There is no greater humbling experience than the sewer dump station. It’s the only place on Earth where grown adults stare at a clear plastic elbow with the intensity of a scientist discovering a new planet, praying that the seal holds. If you see someone wearing surgical gloves and a look of pure terror, give them space. They’re doing the Lord’s work.
3. Everything is a Puzzle
RV living is basically living inside a giant Tetris game. Want to use the toaster? You have to move the coffee maker. Want to open the fridge? Better make sure the slide-out isn’t crushing the dog’s bed. By day three, you’ll be an expert at “The RV Shuffle”—a graceful dance of moving three items just to reach a single fork.
4. The Great Outdoors (and Indoors)
You bought an RV to be “at one with nature.” Nature, however, interprets this as an open invitation. You will find a moth the size of a dinner plate in your bathroom, and you will learn that a single cricket inside an RV sounds like a heavy metal concert at 2:00 AM.
But despite the mishaps, the tight turns, and the occasional sewer-related trauma, there’s nothing quite like it. Because at the end of the day, you’re sitting under the stars with a cold drink, knowing that if you don’t like your neighbors, you can just drive your house somewhere else tomorrow!
